Such as Bill Gates, who founded Microsoft and was the CEO of Microsoft until 2000 when he a step down from his chief executive position and transferred his duties to Ray Ozzie, chief software architect and Craig Mundie, Chief research and strategy officer. He still remains at Microsoft as a non-executive chairman.
Rick Rubin and Russell Simmons who founded Def Jam in 1984 while attending New York University and ran the record label out of Rick Rubin dorm room. Over the years the label has grown into one of the most popular and creative labels in the game. Rick Rubin left Def Jam in 1988, leaving Russell Simmons as the head honcho of the company. With movie production, Def Comedy Jam, clothing line and a host of other business ventures. Music was the foundation for his entertainment empire which currently he continues to build. Jay-Z, Damon Dash and Kareem “BIGGS” Burke founded Roc-A-Fella records in 1996. After being turned down by several labels, the trio started their own label through Priority Records. In the beginning there were issues with signing artist and producing music. It took time for the label to get establish and the world to except the craft of Jay-Z and the art of writting music without a pen or pad. During the 90s with albums like Hard Knock Life, Vol. 2, The Life and Times of S. Carter and The Dynasty: Roc La Familia. The label had build up an increasing popularity and would eventually become the foundation for Jay-Z just as it did for Russell Simmons with a vast majority of business ventures, including a split from those he founded the record label with. Founders of Facebook Mark Zuckerberg and his fellow Harvard University roommates Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes launch the website in 2004 which was a spin-off of Havard University version of Facemash. Membership was initially restricted to Harvard and later in 2004 they expanded to Stanford, Columbia and Yale. The expansion continued to all Ivy Leagues and gradually all universities in Canada and the US. The risk that Bill Gates, Rick Rubin, Russell Simmons, Jay-Z, Damon Dash and Mark Zuckerberg and fellow roommates took to pursue their own company’s was a risk worth taking. We live in a world where everyone says go to college and get a degree. Some earn degrees, some don’t and many go to college and don’t graduate, but if you look at the people in this article there’s a mix of it all. Today these pioneers are some of the richest and wealthiest in the US. You gotta be willing to take risk if you want the whole pie, not a slice. “No Risk, No Reward.”
